Chicken Scratch and Bunkers?

If you have participated in the On-Course and Bunkers class, you should be familiar with this particular technique for hitting bunker shots. It is a slightly more intricate approach compared to other methods. Hence, if you are new to golf, I recommend starting with a simpler technique for hitting bunker shots.
You may be wondering where this poultry namesake originated? During a past On-Course and Bunkers class, after demonstrating this particular method, a student proclaimed, “Hey, that looks like a giant chicken scratch!” Well, the name definitely stuck.
While you may not find the legendary “chicken scratch bunker shot” in your typical Google search, here are the key steps involved:
- Ball position = 1-2” forward of center.
- Open your clubface.
- Open your stance the same amount as the clubface is open to the target.(For example, if the clubface is aimed 5 feet right of the target, the feet and body line should be aimed 5 feet left of the target.)
- Optional to take a steeper/outside backswing path.
- The downswing path should match the backswing path.
- Focus on swinging towards the target while allowing your right hand to feel as though it’s “sliding” underneath at impact. (Note: This sensation can vary from person to person).
- Commit to a full finish position if the sand’s conditions require.
It’s important to note that there are numerous effective techniques for hitting great bunker shots. Discover the method that yields the most success for you, whether it’s the “chicken scratch” or another approach. Finally, fully commit to the shot with unwavering determination!
