For All You Over-Achievers Out There…
Accomplish the next goal…affirmative!
Attain the next win …absolutely!
Be the best…definitely!
Achieve! Achieve! Achieve!
Sound familiar? This sport requires the “achiever-side” of our personality to be redirected. If not, we will become very good at achieving frustration.
Establishing processed-focused goals are far more healthy for our development and enjoyment. For example, redefining achievement as:
- How well we utilize our golf experience as a self-study. (e.g. What attitude and patterns are appearing both on and off the golf course?)
- Are we showing up to practice whether we feel like it or not?
- What is the level of commitment to staying neutral or positive after a missed shot?
- How free from interference are we over each shot?
- Tension management levels? Both physical and mental tension?
No one has perfected this game. Few have barely even come close. If we make our happiness based on external factors, we will most likely achieve disappointment. This will quickly lead to burnout.
By redirecting our commitment to the process, the results will come.
How do you define non-outcome-based achievements in your golf experience?
